“Excuse me”
“Oh, hello” I look up startled; sure that I Harry had locked the door. “I’m sorry but we are closed.” I smile wiping my hands.
“I’m not here for a coffee. I’m looking for Dominic.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll see if I can find him for you.” I slip the key from the till into my pocket as inconspicuously as possible.
“Dominic, are you out here?” I call as I walk outside into the biting wind through the back door.
“Kylie is everything alright?” he says taking a puff on his cigarette.
“Yeah, a man is here to see you. He is waiting inside.”
He exchanges a panicked glance with Harry, our boss and runs inside; Harry hot on his tail. I follow them inside worried. Dominic is shouting at the mysterious stranger and Harry is trying to hold him back.
“Dom, Dom, chill. It’s okay.” I run over and put myself in front of him.
There is very little room in between the counter and the coffee machine but I put my hands on his chest and try to calm him down. The stranger laughs, a sound that makes me cringe at the nastiness in it.
“How sweet, a little girl willing to get in between two angry people.” He hesitates on the word with a smirk. “She is adorable isn’t she?”
The corners of my vision turn red. I hate being called adorable or accused of being a little girl; besides I am seventeen next month. I spin on my heels and with a speed that surprises even myself I swing my fist into his still grinning face. My hand connects with the underside of his jaw and gives off a residual crack that hurts my ears. He turns his head towards me with nail-biting patience. His eyes are amused and he looks happily surprised. Dominic and Harry have gone silent as they watch and wait for his reaction.
“Well, that wasn’t very polite now was it?” he says mockingly.
“You weren’t very polite to me.” I glare at me with forced heat. I look into his eyes and try to hide embarrassment over my rash actions.
His arm flashes out and grips my hand. His hand is cold but I don’t try to pull away. He raises my hand to his lips. His face is not perfect but it has an irresistible beauty about it. His eyes are blue, like the colour of frozen diamonds. With a tug he pulls me against him. I try to pull away but he holds me to his chest lazily. He doesn’t look at me but instead at Dominic. Dominic’s face is going an angry red.
“Let her go, now!” he says dangerously quiet.
“I’m Adam by the way.” He introduces himself to me.
“Adam. You can’t have her. I have already laid claim on her.”
“The hell you have, no one owns or claims me.”
Harry tries to shush me with his eyes but I’m not watching. I don’t see the warning in their faces until too late. Adam pulls me against his side. One arm tucked under one of mine and across my waist.
“You heard her, no one has laid claim to her so that means she is mine for the taking.” With a cold feeling I understand their glances too late.
“Take me Adam.” Dom pleads. “Leave her be. She has no place in this world”
All my insecurities rush to the surface. My mask of cool indifference shatters and all the pain and hurt I live with shows up against my pale skin. I have the same right to be on this planet as any other human. Does he think I mean so little that I don’t share that right? Dom reaches his hand out for me but I shrink away from him into Adam’s arm. Adam laughs and Dom look hurt; then furious. His fury is directed at Adam.
“Go wait over there.” Adam instructs me releasing me then putting his body between mine and Dominic’s.
Dom dives at him with a snarl. Adam grabs him and spins him around in a wide circle then with the extra momentum he throws him into Harry’s side. Harry had been sneaking around the counter trying to get to me but they are thrown through the glass sliding doors. Adam pulls a gun from the waistband of his pants and aims at Dominic. I jump across the room and pull on his arm. The bullet ricochets across the room harmlessly shattering a mirror.
“Don’t kill them please. We can compromise can’t we? You leave them alive and I’ll come with you. Just don’t kill them please.”
“Love; you love them don’t you.” He states disgusted.
“In a way, yes I do.” I say quietly, afraid of the rebuff. “We are like family in a way. Even though sometimes love hurts they are a part of the best part of my life.”
I look at the two stunned men on the floor. Yes, I love them like my family. They have always been there to support me, to tell my worries to and they have protected me against myself and dangerous thinking. Dom told me I was part of the team and that if I ever needed anything that they would be there to help me. I have relied on their guidance for a long time now. It is time to repay them for what they have one for me.
“Very well then; I accept.”
Adam tucks the gun into his belt and throws me carelessly over his shoulder. I reach out my hand to Dominic and Harry. A tear drops onto the floor. Dominic scrambles to feet and runs after me but Adam has already gone through the back door and climbed onto his sleek, black motorbike. I am facing the wrong way on the bike. I’m trapped between Adam’s two encasing arms and looking back over his shoulder. Adam lifts my legs around his waist but I don’t notice. Dominic and Harry screaming after me fills me vision and thoughts. I cry against Adam’s chest. With a nod, Adam starts the bike and pulls into a wheelie before he takes off.
How did I get into this position? Two hours ago I walked into work, planning on cleaning up the small cafĂ© and spending time with my friends just like any other day. Before I would leave I was always given a folded ten dollar note which would then go into my meagre savings which I keep in a concealed pouch under my shirt. But now I am sitting on some random person’s motorcycle, riding through the middle of the night wondering if I will ever see my friends or family again. The motorbike turns off the highway and onto a dirt path lined by trees. We climb up a steep mountain face and come to a small cabin in the woods.
Adam pulls to a stop and dismounts then hoists me into his arms. I try to flee but I am ensnared in his arms. He forces his way through the door and he drops me to my feet. I make a break for the door Adam grabs my wrist and pulls me into the house. I scrabble with my other hand to get free but I am just half dragged through the dark house. I am shoved into a room and Adam locks the door behind us. The door key is shoved into Adam’s pants pocket so I can’t escape.
I back away from him and fall against the bed. I jump across the bed and sprint for the window. Adam doesn’t move to stop me. I look out of the window and down into a canyon. I shake and back away from the window, my only escape routes cut off. Adam wraps his arms around my torso and tosses me bodily onto the bed. I reach for a book on the bedside table and throw it at his head. He sidesteps out of harms way. I roll to the floor and worm my way underneath it.

Vampires

I open my eyes to the freezing darkness of dawn and wonder where I am. I struggle to think through the heavy layers of grogginess enveloping my mind. Vampire! I freeze in shock horror as I realize that there is a gentle hand on my waist. I turn my head slowly and see Adam lying on his side asleep. He is wearing a black t-shirt but the white duvet covers from his waist down so I don’t know if he is wearing pants. I cautiously slide away from him on the bed and wince when his hand hits the soft mattress with a thump. Adam’s eyes flicker but he stays asleep. I pad slowly across the cold hard floor of the abandoned hospital. I run through the door and down the
